Mystery Prize – A battleship-esque EFL game

·

·

This classroom activity is best suited for revising colours, animals, objects and relative clauses. This activity works well for both in-person language lessons as well as small online classes.

Recommended Level: A1 – B1

A 3 by 3 grid that has an image of a present in five squares, an image of a red X in 3 squares and an image of an elephant wearing a hat in one square.

How to play:

Give all your students two grids to work with. In the first grid the students will draw their own mystery prizes. The prizes they draw should be based on what vocabulary you want them to practise. For lower levels this might be colours and animals e.g. a green tiger or a purple elephant. For higher levels this might be relative clauses e.g. an elephant that is reading a book or a hamburger that is wearing glasses.

Ask your students to draw only three prizes in their grid. They must pick three different squares to draw their prizes. Therefore, they cannot draw all three of their prizes in just one square. Once your students have finished creating their prizes, put your students into pairs.

To play this battleship inspired game, students take it in turns against each other to find their partner’s mystery prizes. Whoever finds all three prizes first is the winner.

Student A starts the round by asking their partner what is inside one of their squares e.g. “What is inside D3?” Student B will look at their own grid and will either say “Nothing” for an empty square or will tell Student A what prize they have won. While playing the game, students must avoid showing their grids to their partner.

For in-person lessons students can reuse their original grid with a variety of different partners. For small online lessons, students will need to create another grid to play against the same or different parnters. Alternatively, to save time you can give pre-made grids to your students.
